Sears #2298 Merced, CA Closing

It was announced on October 15, 2018 that the Sears location in Merced, CA would be closing. This store will close sometime in January 2019. This Sears is located in the Merced Mall on Olive Dr. The mall's other anchors stores are JCPenney & Kohl's with Target, Michael's, and Big Lots located on out parcels around the mall. On my visit here the liquidation sale was well underway and I would estimate that this store will close the 2nd or 3rd week of January. This store had a abundance of large appliances and fixtures still available. The Auto Center is still in operation here but the bay door windows look like there's 10 years worth of filth built up on them. This store looks busy in the pictures however most of the people here were employees. They only had one cash register open on my visit and there wasn't very many people in line. There was a lot of empty space here but it was spread out throughout the store. Lets take a tour of the outside...

Let's head inside...

The store was closed on Tuesday for Christmas

Lots of fixtures left and a lot of empty space...

Jewelry counter with shoes to the left with woman's apparel on the right and kid's apparel behind...

Mattress and Bedding area...

Lots of large appliances still available for purchase here...

One of the many unmanned checkouts throughout the store...

The only checkout that was open is right in front of the entrance to the mall...

Lets take a look at the mall entrance. This opens right into the food court area with a McDonald's directly to the right of these pictures...

Lets take another look at the outside for some parting pictures from this store closing tour...

One last look at the outside here at the closing Sears in Merced, CA. This mall is in need of sprucing up as it is showing it's age (opened in 1969). Sears will be the only vacant anchor store in the mall. There are plans to renovate the mall starting in the spring of 2019 that could take up to 18 months to complete. Currently there's space for about 25 stores within the mall however about half are currently vacant. Plans include 50,000 sf of new retail space and possibly a second floor just for a new movie theater! This mall is pretty small as it's currently just over 600,000 sf and the only indoor mall in the area.  I hope you enjoyed the tour of this closing Sears as I will more than likely not make it back here before they close for good as I'm trying to cover the other Kmart/Sears closings. I plan to visit the Sears in Bakersfield and the Kmart in Delano at some point this week. Then visit the Kmart's in Lemoore and Visalia next week.
