Walmart #5859 Wasco, CA

Today brings another Walmart location to the blog! This is the Walmart Supercenter in Wasco, CA that opened on 1-13-16. This Walmart was built on Hwy 46 on the outskirts of town across the street from the former Kmart. This store is about 160,000 sf and employs about 300 people according to news reports of it's opening. When this location opened there was a Subway and a Smartstyle Hair Salon inside on the grocery side but both closed within a few months and are still walled off today. This location still has the yellow/light blue paint on the walls and brown on the outside. When you enter on the grocery side you walk into produce with the deli and bakery on the left with the former Subway across from the self checkouts on the right. Frozen is up front next to produce but dairy is along the back wall. The clothing departments span the middle of the store with the baby section across form pets along the back wall. Shoes, electronics, hardware departments along the back wall. The Auto center and department is located in the back right corner with sporting goods and toys along the right wall. The garden center here is not walled off and is open to the rest of the store and is located on the far right side of the store with 4 checkouts available. The cosmetics departments is located next to the garden center with health & beauty, pharmacy and vision center along the front wall on the gm side. The vision center is attached to the pharmacy and I can say I've never seen this configuration before. Let's get to the pictures!

I visit this store often and each time I'm here it's never too busy leading me to believe it's not a high profiting location. The Kmart across the street closed in July 2016 just 7 months after Walmart opened and the other big grocery store in town Save Mart closed in October 2015 shortly after construction of the Walmart started. There are a few Mexican grocery stores in town but no other major chains leaving Walmart to corner this smaller market. The next closest Walmart is a busy Supercenter in Delano about 17 miles away then the 8 Supercenters/Neighborhood Markets in Bakersfield. Well that will do it for this Walmart store tour!
